Subject: Beware of serious errors in the first few generations
Subject: Beware of serious errors in the first few generations
Consult Mrs. Barclay's article in The American Genealogist before relying on this book, or you will likely waste a lot of time climbing the wrong family tree.
A quote, published in The American Genealogist "Notes on the Dunham Family of Plymoth, Mass." by Mrs. John E. Barclay, vol. 30, pg 143 states that this book "Dunham genealogy. Deacon John Dunham of Plymouth, Massachusetts. 1589-1669. And his descendants" by Isaac Watson Dunham (1907), "contains a vast amount of material poorly arranged and much that is confusing and misleading. In fact, there are several serious errors and some statements that are absolutely impossible” All of her statements and corrections are backed up with source documentation in her 13 page article.
Mrs. Barclays corrections to this book and her research has stood the test of time. A reference note in John Dunham's profile within the "Early New England Families" project at the New England Historic and Genealogical Society, Alicia Crane Williams, lead genealogist states that Mrs. Barclays article in The American Genealogist v. 30 pg 143 "remains the definitive treatment on the first three generations of the John Dunham family."
